DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Springfield Preservation Trust’s Party on the Pond summer fundraiser on August 23\, featuring a silent auction\, enjoy bountiful hors d’oeuvres\, as well as wines and sodas along this hidden waterfront oasis. Purchase tickets here. \n \n\n\n\nHistory: Built in 1954. Joseph Chapdelaine built and lived in this house with his wife Florida. The house was designed by James Fitzsimmons. Mr. Chapdelaine was president and treasurer of Joseph Chapdelaine\, Inc.\, which advertised itself as “Builder of Fine Homes.” The owner\, Ray Chapdelaine\, is the grandson of the Quebec native who specialized in building ranch houses under the Chapdelaine Construction name and developed much of that area. Joseph had four sons\, all of whom joined the family business. He used this property as both his office and home\, and it featured “show-off” features for clients\, such as paneled rooms and a slate roof. The “totem pole” of animals was chainsaw-carved seventeen years ago after a devastating snowfall had wrecked an oak and left standing the high snag that remains

SUMMARY:English Arts & Crafts Style in Forest Park Heights (A Historic Tour)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the arts & crafts movement via the Craftsman architectural style in Forest Park Heights Historic District. This tour will take place on October 10 at 10:30am. \n\n\n\n\nThe arts & crafts movement was an international reaction to the overly ornate and mass-produced Victorian era styles. The American architectural response is what we know as Craftsman. The British had their own response–which made it across The Pond in the early 20th century. \nThis tour will focus on examples in the Forest Park Heights Historic District.This walking tour departs from Forest Park Avenue and Maplewood Terrace at 10:30am and ends at 12pm. The tour is $5 for Springfield Preservation Trust\, Springfield Museums\, and $10 for non-members\, payable in advance on Eventbrite or at the tour’s outset with cash. \nSecond Saturday Tours explore historic Springfield. The series is co-presented by the Springfield Preservation Trust\, Springfield Museums\, and Springfield Libraries—and is generously sponsored by the Springfield Cultural Council and Mass Cultural Council. \nAbout the Tour Guide \nBob McCarroll has been a significant force for the preservation of Springfield’s historic properties since the mid-1970s\, when he was part of the reactivation of the Springfield Preservation Trust into an advocacy organization. Between 1972 and 2002\, he worked in the Springfield Planning Department\, where he helped create five of the early local historic districts. Now retired\, Bob served for 11 years on the Springfield Historical Commission and has served on the Springfield Community Preservation Committee since its formation in 2017. Bob has served for more than 45 years on the board of the Springfield Preservation Trust\, where he has organized house tours\, worked on self-guided walking tour brochures\, and applied for and coordinated grant work at 77 Maple Street. Bob is a long-time resident of the Mattoon Street Historic District and coordinates the annual Mattoon Street Arts Festival\, the region’s oldest arts and crafts show. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of William and Mary and a Master of City and Regional Planning degree from Rutgers University. Bob is a recipient of the 2016 Massachusetts Historical Commission Preservation Awards Local Preservationist Award\, the 2018 Preservation Massachusetts K. Julie McCarthy Community Spirit Award\, the 2018 Order of William Pynchon Award\, and the 2024 Mass History Alliance Bay State Legacy Award. \nAbout the Springfield Preservation Trust \nFounded in 1972\, the Springfield Preservation Trust strives to preserve and protect properties in Springfield that have architectural or historic significance. As the only non-profit\, non-government advocacy group for historic preservation in Springfield\, the Trust will continue to be the voice of preservation into the future. SUMMARY:Springfield Armory: "Voices from the Grave" Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:See history come alive in this tour of Springfield Cemetery\, featuring live actors portraying Springfield’s influential past residents on October 18 at 1pm. \n\n\n\n\nLearn about important figures in Springfield history at our annual “Voices from the Grave” historic cemetery tour. This year the Trust will feature history from Springfield Armory through former residents. \nAttendees will have a unique opportunity to delve into the lives of five influential figures in Springfield’s history. The tour winds through the cemetery’s pathways and features\, former residents to visit this year\, including Robert Orr\, first Master Armorer; Elizabeth A. Cassidy Bull\, she was a member of the Adelphi Chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star; among three other former Springfield residents. This year the tour will have a theme to highlight Springfield Armory former residents. \nHosted by the Springfield Preservation Trust and developed by SPT Secretary Michael Stevens\, the tour is an hour-long experience through Springfield Cemetery. It is led by docents who take visitors on a tour to graves of interesting cemetery residents\, where costumed interpreters speak about each person of intrigue. \nHour-long walking tours will depart every fifteen minutes starting at 1:00PM at Springfield Cemetery\, 110 Pine Street. Tickets are free due to the partnership with American Alliance of Museums and National Park Service. Reserve your tickets here. This event will charge for tickets again next year. This event is held rain or shine! Enter Springfield Cemetery through the Pine Street entrance. Do not use the Maple Street entrance.
